  1. I like to give my WordPerfect documents a professionally
  2. typeset look by using em dashes--like these--in
  3. mid-sentence. [The macro is available as P4WPM\ALTM.WPM on
  4. your PowerBase *.* Volume IV diskette.]

  6. To use the macro, press <Alt>-M. You'll see a hyphen on
  7. screen, but what's actually stored is the code `4,34', which
  8. selects symbol 34 from the fourth character set. For a
  9. professional look, don't insert spaces around your em
  10. dashes. Just butt them against the text that comes before
  11. and after the dashing dash.

  16. Editor's note: WordPerfect provides about 1500 symbols in 12
  17. character sets, and this macro is a good guide for creating
  18. macros for the others. If your printer doesn't support a
  19. character, WordPerfect 5.1 will print it as a graphic,
  20. assuming you have a graphics printer. So before using these
  21. symbols, press <Shift>-<F7> to bring up the Print/Options
  22. menu, and set Graphics to Medium or High.

  24. If you're using version 5.0, however, you may not be able to
  25. print em dashes or certain other special symbols. If you
  26. have trouble printing em dashes, try 3,8 in place of `4,34'.

  28. If that doesn't work, you need to investigate which symbols
  29. your printer can handle. The value pairs represent a
  30. character set and symbol number, respectively. To get a
  31. complete list of available characters--and see how they look
  32. on your printer--print the CHARACTR.DOC file provided with
  33. WordPerfect. (This file is named CHARMAP.TST in some
  34. versions.)
